Understanding the Sorting App

Modified on Wed, 30 Jul at 9:49 AM

The Sorting app in Nedap Now helps you manage animal flow efficiently by automatically or manually directing animals to specific sorting areas. Whether you're sorting individual cows for insemination or scheduling group treatments based on health or reproduction data, the app gives you full control over the conditions used to separate animals.

How to Use the Sorting App

Before you create a sorting rule, take a moment to consider what you want to achieve. The four options in the left panel help you manage sorting in different ways:

  • Schedule: Open an overview of all recent, active, and upcoming sorting events. See Schedule Tab: Overview of All Sorting Rules for more information.
  • Quick sort: Sort selected animals immediately. Ideal for one-off actions that override existing rules. See Use the Quick Sort Option for detailed instructions.
  • Lists:  Import a custom list of animals and apply specific sorting rules to that list only. See Create a Sorting List for detailed instructions.
  • Rules: Create rules based on conditions like health, heat, or SmartTag issues. This is where you define how animals must be sorted automatically, without needing to manually select them every time. See Create a Sorting Rule for detailed instructions.
Tip

Already have a rule that fits your goal, but want to temporarily disable it—for example, during pasture season or seasonal calving? You can deactivate the rule without deleting it. See Disable a Sorting Rule for all details.

Tip

For best results, coordinate sorting schedules with milking, treatment or herd check routines. This minimizes animal stress, prevents unnecessary re-routing, and ensures animals are in the right place at the right time. For example, sorting cows for insemination directly after milking reduces handling, lowers stress, and ensures these animals can be inseminated at their optimal insemination moment.
