Identify Likely Empty Cows (Seasonal Calving)

Modified on Mon, 5 Oct at 11:13 AM

Use this custom worklist on farms with seasonal calving to identify cows that may be empty (not pregnant). It shows cows recorded as inseminated more than 45 days ago and with a heat detected less than 25 days ago.

For setup instructions, see Create a custom worklist.

Note

Use this list as a management tool to estimate how many cows in the herd are still cycling. However, it should not be used as a substitute for pregnancy diagnosis. Some cows may display signs of heat even if they are already pregnant.

Suggested Columns

  • Last insemination: Include both the date and the number of days ago.

  • Last heat: Include both the date and the number of days ago.

Suggested Filters

The following example shows lactating cows in the colostrum pen that are more than 4 days in milk. Adjust the DIM value to match the farm’s routine.

FilterOperatorValue
Last heat interval≥
16 days
Last heat interval≤
25 days
Last heat<25. Select Days ago
Last insemination>45. Select Days ago
Reproduction status=Inseminated

Add Last heat interval twice to set both the lower and upper limits.

Tip

Add and set up one filter at a time. Check Preview after each filter to see whether the expected cows appear.

See the Overview of Filters and Columns for the available options.

Note

A worklist that uses filters does not update in real time. Update the worklist manually before using it to see the latest data.
