Understand Locomotion Score and the Locomotion Graph

Modified on Fri, 20 Feb at 4:22 PM

Each animal that walks under the SmartSight camera receives a locomotion score. This score reflects how the animal’s walking pattern compares to her own normal movement over time.

Locomotion Score

The locomotion score ranges from 1 to 100. Lower scores indicate lameness, while higher scores indicate healthy mobility. Based on this score, animals are assigned to one of three locomotion classifications:

  • Healthy (61–100): The animal shows a normal, healthy mobility.
  • Lame (31–60): The animal shows signs of reduced mobility and may be mildly lame.
  • Severe (1–30): The animal shows signs of severe lameness.

The Lameness checks worklist shows the animal’s current locomotion score and its trend over the past 24 hours.

View the animal's locomotion history with the Locomotion graph. You can see the scores over the past 7, 14, 30, or 60 days, or view per lactation (via the Cow app).

Locomotion Graph

The Locomotion Graph displays the animal’s locomotion score over time. Use the graph to evaluate the effectiveness of your protocols, the trim, and monitor how quickly animals recover after trimming.

How to Use the Locomotion Graph

Use the following elements of the graph to understand the data and take action:

  • The graph is divided into the locomotion classifications: Healthy, Lame, and Severe
  • Each point in the graph represents a locomotion score recorded when the animal passed under the SmartSight camera.
  • Lameness issues (Strong decline, Low and declining and Low score) appear at the top of the graph.
  • Trimming events are shown as a trimming icon   in the graph.

Where to Find the Locomotion Graph

You can access the locomotion graph from the Worklist app, Cow app, or any Custom worklist.

Tip

To view locomotion scores for a specific lactation, use the Cow app. This view is not available from a worklist.

From the Worklist app:

  1. Select the Lameness checks or Custom worklist.
  2. Within the Active tab, select a row or click the arrow at the end of the row.
  3. The graph for the selected animal will appear.

From the Cow app:

  1. Select List of animals.
  2. Select the animal number.
  3. In the left panel, select Locomotion.
