Use the Heat Score to Identify Animals in Heat

Modified on Tue, 12 Aug at 11:48 AM

The heat score shows the likelihood that an animal is in heat. It’s calculated by Nedap Now based on real-time sensor data and is displayed on a 1 to 5-star scale

How is the Heat Score Determined?

The heat score is based on three key factors:

  • Cyclicity: Whether the animal is in a fertile phase

  • Pregnancy status: Animals confirmed pregnant are excluded

  • Activity level: Increased movement is a strong heat indicator

The system uses sensor data and historical behavior to assign stars. While increased activity often signals the start of a heat, the heat score may take some time to update as more data is collected.

Understanding Star Ratings and Colors

Star Ratings

  • 1–2 stars: Minor increase in activity
Only considered a heat when confirmed by user judgment

  • 3–5 stars: Significant increase in activity
    Typically indicates a true heat

Star Colors

Each heat is assigned a default color based on its star rating:

  • 1-2 star heats are grey by default.
  • 3-5 star heats are green by default.

User judgement can override default colors:

  • Negative judgment (No heat): Stars turn grey.
  • Positive judgment (In heat): Stars turn green.

Important

Without user input, colors remain at their default values.

Adjusting Heat Score Sensitivity

You can fine-tune the sensitivity settings to better align heat detection with your herd's behavior.

Example: Reading a Heat Score

The reproduction graph may show combinations like:

  • A confirmed heat followed by insemination.
  • A mild activity increase with a negative user judgment (not considered a true heat).
  • A current heat still awaiting confirmation
